The artist, Albert Henry Krehbiel, was one of seven children born to J. J. and Mary Leisy Krehbiel. In 1879, J. J. Krehbiel established a prosperous carriage and wagon works in the building that is now the Carriage Factory Gallery.
Expressing an interest in drawing and painting at a very young age, Albert attended Bethel College for two years and then entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1898. While at the Art Institute, he was awarded a traveling scholarship that allowed him to travel to Paris to continue his development as a painter. After returning from Paris, he joined the faculty of the Art Institute and taught there until his death in 1945.
Krehbiel’s work took on the characteristics of French Impressionism in the early 1920’s and he became widely known as a very successful American impressionist. He painted incessantly and in all seasons. His subjects ranged from the southwest environment of Santa Fe, New Mexico to the wooded and urban landscapes of the Chicago region.
The Carriage Factory Gallery is privileged to have nine of Krehbiel’s paintings in its permanent collection.
